Where is Volume 9?

Hi, this is DasRay. Recently I have gotten many questions regarding the release and progress of volume 9 translation of Tensura. There happened to be things regarding the progress among other things that I hope to address, so might as well blog about it.

Current Progress and Release Date of Volume 9

As of the time I’m writing this, that is mid January, me and another translator (new member, say hi to Annie when the volume’s put) have translated around 70% of the volume. Editors have done around 20-30% of the editing/proofreading. Volume 9 is in fact one of the longest volume of Tensura that we’ve worked on, and let’s just say not every single chapter is that fun to translate.

With that being said, I’ve actually been rather productive for the past week, and translation should be expected done in another week around the corner of Chinese New Year. After this most members of the translation team would be focusing on editing and proofreading, which is likely another week of work. If considering some additional polish, the ETA of Volume 9 will be around Early February. The file release will again be on our website, I’ll per usual post the relevant links on reddit and discord server (which currently I’m not in, boohoo).

What we are changing

After a long hiatus, some of my personal views on what should be in a Japanese to English light novel translation has changed, and this time we will be experimenting with some changes that will make life easier for both us and the readers:

  1. No more Japanese quotation signs. E.g. 「」. All dialogue, skills will be using the English quotation signs “” from now on.
  2. Passage are now translated in predominantly past tense, but if you see some grammatical misuse, please understand it’s very difficult for us to spot as there is a difference between story telling in English and Japanese.
  3. We will try to fully integrate options for official (yenpress) translation of names and skills in our free online reading app “Slime Reader”. This is already a feature since Volume 8 if you haven’t checked it out.
  4. Translation will be less rigid in following the specific sentence structure/metaphor of the Japanese texts. Instead we will try to make things more sensible in English.
  5. Less dank memes that are completely out of context, perhaps some appropriate ones in context. Sorry guys, translation is very serious business.

Btw, do you know I’m translating a tensura doujin?

Details to be revealed during release of vol 9, kappa

Also, you don’t know how happy I was to learn that yenpress isn’t releasing vol 8 until May, not that anyone should be happy about such late release, but still… *wink*

That’s all, thank you for supporting our translation and the Tensura series, remember to support the official release of Tensura manga and light novels. See you at volume 9.

LN Side Stories Update

and other stuff

Long time no see, don’t get excited yet, we are still on hiatus. But our hardworking editor Voxel (Special Thanks to him) has been working on revising the LN side stories that I translated back in March. The one previously available on the website is a very rough version. The updated version has aligned the terminologies and overhauled the grammar. (Also available on slime reader, so check it out) We are also testing out some new formatting and we will accomodate the main story translation with it in the future.

As for the main volumes, we will resume the translation at the end of November. So stay tuned.

Volume 8 release

And other stuffs

Fuse-sensei, forgive me for using these copyrighted materials

Kept you all waiting huh, well, we are finally done with editing volume 8. Although we suffered an unwarranted period of lack of productivity in the editing department, I’m very proud to say that this volume is arguably the most refined release for the all the past translation that we have done.

I hope you all will enjoy the volume, and though we will be taking the hiatus, keep your hopes high, go support the official light novel and managa release and just enjoy Tensura series in all the ways you can. Thank you for your support and we’ll see you next time.

Slime Reader, what it is and how to use it.

Jokes aside, many of you may have noticed that we have recently rolled out our very own reader app called Slime Reader located at https://tensurafan.github.io/. Slime Reader is now our official app for reading our translation of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Of course you can still read it via a PDF or ePUB but our recommended way of reading our translation is the Slime Reader app. Now, you may be wondering a few things such:

  • What is it?
  • How do I install this app?
  • Can use this app offline?
  • Why did you even bother?
  • How much did this app cost?
  • what are it’s features?

Well this post is here to answer all those questions.

What is it?

The slime reader app is basically a glorified e-book reader app with some nice features specifically for reading our translation of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. The main feature is allowing users to choose the name that they want to see (eg: Karrion vs Carion) and sharing of lines in our translation to facilitate discussion.

How do I install this app?

If you are using an Android device. You can simply install it by navigating to https://tensurafan.github.io/ via Chrome or Firefox and then click on the pwa-con icon on he upper left of your device then follow the prompts to have it installed on your device. for iOS users, you have to visit the page via Safari and “share” the page and under the share menu there should be an option (you’ll likely have to scroll a bit) called “Add to Home Screen” which will download the app. Since the only iOS device I have is a iPodTouch 4G, you’re gonna have to make due with old OS look but in modern iOS it works the same way.

Can use this app offline?

Yes. You can actually use the app from the web or by installing it but it’s safer if it’s installed as an app (and easier to access too!).

Why did you even bother?

There’s actually a multitude of reasons. On the surface we received alot of feedback along the lines of “Hey why don’t you guys align your names with Yen Press/WN/Manga etc…” and this app is our solution to that. By allowing reader to choose the names that they want to see, we are hoping to offer the best reading experience we can offer.

The actual main reason for this is because recently, a light novel aggregation site (that I wont name) has added our translation to their aggregation. Normally this is totally cool we did it as a fan project and we’re happy to get more exposure however one thing that they did that’s absolutely inexcusable is the removal of the credits and to a lesser extent, the foot notes and comments. This is something we put alot of effort into working on and many individuals had to make sacrifices like free time or in my case, various side projects including my Shizue Izawa cosplay to get this done. That’s why it’s incredibly infuriating that these people would do this effectively stealing our content.

To quote a Gabe Newell

Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the U.S. release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate’s service is more valuable.

By that notion, it’s easy to see why the aggregation sites win, they offer the convenience of being able to access all of the volumes right there for free and also alot of other Light Novels too. There’s really no reason to choose our version instead where we’re offering the translation but only for Slime and nothing else and not even all the volumes. Overall, our user experience is not as well done as the aggregation sites.

This app is our solution to this problem. We may not be able to offer what the aggregation sites can offer in their large library but what we can offer is an app that has a really nice reading experience, familiar names, themeing options, and URL links to each and every line in our translation to facilitate discussion on media outlets like Discord, Reddit, Facebook, twitter, etc… This is the real and main reason for this app.

How much did this app cost?

On my end, 4 weekends and a few sleepless nights. As many of you know, for my day job, i works as a Front End Web Developer. This just means that I personally have all the skills required to make this app a thing. Hosting also free cuz we host on Github via gh-pages so all in all. All in all, I paid just a few weekends and a couple extra hours of sleep. I’ve given up much more time to work on the translations anyways so another couple weekends aint much.

That’s why we are able to keep this app free and ad-free. We don’t track you or show you ads but in exchange, please make bug reports when you find them… please (>Q3Q)>

What are its features?

As mentioned earlier, you can read our updated revision on the reader. Not only that, you can also choose the terms you want to see. Not every term is chooseable and you’ll know which ones are chooseable as those are underlined. if you click on it, you’ll be greeted to the term chooser menu where you can make changes such as changing “Carion” to “Karrion” for all instances of “Carion” on the page, Nifty!! Of course, I’m only human and I will likely have missed a number of terms and a number of options. feel free to let me know about these via Discord or on Github issues. (Yes I know Ruminas in the YP translation Luminous)

The second feature of the app is to allow you to share particular lines with friends on social media. I specifically added the quote preview into the app to allow for easier sharing so tweet / discord / facebook away ^_^. To get at this URL, all you have to do is long press any particular line you want to share and the URL will show up for you to copy.

Another nice feature I think the app has over the copy cats is that it’s offline usable. If you installed the app, the app will always be available for offline use. If you want to use read it on the go and your don’t have a data plan, this here is for you. The install instructions are up above

Finally we have the standard set of reading features like saving your reading location locally, and choosing different themes (for you OLED display users and those who prefer light theme for some reason). Just look in the menu for the theme setting and location saving is automatic.

TL;DR

There was a copycat who stole our work. In order to make it more difficult, we built our own app to provide a better reading experience than what the copy cats can provide. The result of this is the Slime Reader app. We here hope you all enjoy our translation of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime as our entire team put ALOT of effort into it. If you want any features added or any terms added/updated do let me know on Discord or on Github. Anyways back to editing / app fixeing UwU…

June Update Log

Illustration by Akechi Shizuku-sensei (明地雫), illustrator of 転生しても社畜だった件

A summary and a personal apology:

Definitely not a clickbait header, anyway, this is translator DasRay and first let’s do some brief housekeeping. As mentioned in the note of volume 7, we are taking things at a slower pace for volume 8 and 9, more attention to proofreading with Japanese source and more editing. As of a few days ago, I was still working on translating volume 9 and aiming to release both volumes near end of August when Yenpress releases volume 6, however, unforseeable events IRL has occured and I fear my productivity will be greatly reduced if not at the cost of my personal career IRL. This is why I’ve decided to temporarily stop the translation after the release of volume 8, I apologize for the unfulfilled promise and to inform the readers expecting a double release that volume 9 will be put on hold for now (Someone else will be taking over to produce pieces of volume 9 while I’m gone, but it is unlikely going to be released).

Progess in June:

My current progress on translation is 100% complete for volume 8 and 10% into volume 9. This number may seem optimistic, but Volume 9 is a long volume (e.g. 100 pages for chapter 1 only), so again I apologize beforehand if we are unable to deliver on time as I speculated a month prior.

In addition to translation, our editors have also been working hard to revise the previous two volumes. If you haven’t noticed, both volume 6 and 7 have been revised and updated in the Light Novel section. I urge the readers, whether new or old to use the revised editions as the new reference material if ever needed, as major changes to grammer and some instances terminologies and names are made. (Special thanks to Mimisan for reaching out on reddit and help us proofread volume 7 with the Japanese raw. The same love goes out to the other proofreaders who worked on the two volumes)

In other news, our own talented coder/editor muggy has finished a web reading app that will be integrated in the blog for reading the novel online so that’s something to look forward to. Check the app here or in the Light Novel section. Keep up the good work, muggy.

Conclusion:

I think the team (at least part of) as well as myself have been productive this June. However, my own scheduel has become more restraining eariler than I expected. So again, I sincerely apologize for leaving early. I’ll be availabe again this November and enjoy relatively free scheduel for three to four months afterward, so I hope to see you all again and catch up with the lost progress. Until then, stay tuned.

Mitz Vah Interview (Volume 8.5)

Another quick translation of the other half of the interview from volume 8.5, the illustrator of Tensura みっつばー-sensei (Mitz Vah). I think the interview really reflects a lot about his outgoing personality and the style of his drawings. Not as long as the Fuse piece, but you will get some insights to the work he has done through this.

Cheers.

Now just gonna wait if the Taiki-sensei’s interview from vol 13.5 to ever get a CN translation (prb not kek)

(RE/FIN) Discourse on Demon Lord and dementia writer

Or how I wrote a moderately long post for nothing

So I went back to read about the subject of “Demon Lord Seed” again, the metaphor of “Seed of Demon Lord” & “Egg of Hero” seem to be very commonly accepted in both EN and CN community. Honestly I’m fine with the term if the phrase “魔王の種” (Seed of Demon Lord) similar to “勇者の卵” (Egg of Hero), well if the phrase is ever shown anywhere. And when I check vol 8.5 just to be sure, here’s the grand result:

Literally no mention of the word “魔王種 “, all the addresses are “魔王”

So I guess this kinda shows that I’m right with the interpretation? The rule of Chosen Hero having a literal “egg” doesn’t apply to the Demon Lord, they are apparently just “Demon Lord”, which probably makes “Demon Lord Breed/Class” the best translation for 魔王種 . But also, Fuse, why would you use a term this frequently in your book and just completely drop it out of the official data-book that is supposed to clarify stuff. Also this is the only iteration of this term, they don’t even bother to explain it again in vol 13.5 which is a big oof I guess.

Anyhow, pretty pointless discussion at this point. I’ll just continue with what I planned, though I’m prb gonna start calling “勇者の卵” Hero’s nuts until Fuse stops nutting on me with inconsistent lores.

Fuse Interview (Volume 8.5)

So just did a quick translation of Fuse’s interview in volume 8.5, some pretty interesting stuff here that reveals a lot about both the author and his writing style. Even though this is an old interview, it still has some pretty interesting content to check out. (there are some confusions which are highlighted, won’t affect overall read)

Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/AMidTJwZ

Mitz Vah interview from the same volume is coming soon.

A Discourse on “Demon Lord”

In the translator note of volume 7 I discussed about how I find the translation of the phrase ” 魔王種 ” to “Demon Lord Seed” (Yenpress) to be inaccurate. I guess I was a little vague in the explanation.

In the context of the slime world, the phrase itself “Demon Lord Seed” does “happen” to make sense, because ” 魔王種 ” is the prerequisite for a monster to awaken and become a ” 真なる魔王 ” (True Demon Lord). However, in both the web novel and light novel, we see passage such as this:

解。主は既に、魔王種の条件を満たしています。魔王への進化に必要な条件には人間10,000名の生贄が必要です 。

(EN) Master has already fulfilled the necessary condition of a “Demon Lord Seed”. The evolution to “Demon Lord” requires the sacrifice of 10000 humans.

WN Chapter 68

What this shows is that while Rimuru, at this point of WN/LN (prior to harvest festival) has already met the condition of a “Demon Lord Seed”. This however implies that ” 魔王種 ” is more or less a measure of power, i.e. racial level like how a ” 魔人 ” (Majin) is considered stronger than an average monster. The WN is more vague, the LN elaborates more with the example of Karion and Frey, who are unawakened yet still considered as Demon Lord of the world because they fulfilled two conditions:

1) 魔族(魔人)は成長の果てに「魔王種」へと至ることがある。

They have become “Demon Lord Seed” after growth as a Majin.

2) この時点でも他の魔王達に承認されれば魔王を名乗ることができる。

They went forth and gained acknowledgement from the other Demon Lords and can openly claim themselves as “Demon Lord”.

Volume 8.5 Racial Terminologies Apparently it’s a fusion of story + 8.5

I think these are all indications that ” 魔王種 ” is the general term for describing monsters that reached the racial level of “Demon Lord”, i.e. either it is a “Class” or a “Breed” (I’m considering changing it to class as Breed sounds somewhat strange). It is not however a specific term of “Seed”, indicating that the characters who are already ” 魔王種 ” is somehow not Demon Lord, they are, just not awakened to a “True Demon Lord”. (Similar example refers to Guy Crimson dialogue with Karion in Chapter 6 of Volume 6).

But this is just my opinion, if Fuse uses twitter like Maruyama I can probably clarify it better, but as of now, I will not use the phrase “Demon Lord Seed”.

Tell me what you think about this in the comment, if anyone actually read kek.

PS: also as someone who at least understands kanji, translating it to “seed” gives me the impression that someone separate the term “魔王” and “種” and translated them individually to “Demon Lord” and “Seed”, whereas in any other instance of “種” being used in this novel as well as other media it is referring to a species or a racial class. kek Idk man.
